24 November 2007 - 10:45China & the USA Share Top Spot on Sophos’ Quarterly List Of Spamming Countries

July 19, 2007 (Computerworld Australia) – Sophos has released its quarterly list of global statistics from April to June 2007 which reveals China and the USA as the top offenders when it comes to countries sending spam.

Six of the top entries are from European countries which comprise a combined higher percentage of spam than the US which currently accounts for 19.6% of spam worldwide.

When compared to 2006, the second quarter saw a worldwide 9% increase of spam. South Korea came in third on the list with 6.5% spam, then Poland with 4.8%, Germany with 4.2%, Brazil 4.1%, France 3.3%, Russia 3.1%, Turkey 2.9%, UK with 2.8%, Italy with 2.8% and finally India with 2.5%

As the senior security consultant of Sophos, Carole Theriault, stated “Once a machine is compromised, it is often used to send out spam for a variety of campaigns.” She has acknowledged that countries need to work together to make a global effort to combat spam.

Paul Ducklin, the head of technology at Sophos Asia Pacific, comments on the widespread increase of spam: “In a matter of seconds, we can see compromised systems send messages on a dozen different topics from stock scams to diet drugs.”

He warns that spammers are prepared to use computers illegally from any location in order to send email spam. “The map shows activity almost everywhere people live,” he notes, “Africa may not yet be very well-wired, but it’s certainly wired enough to be useful to the spammers.”
